Feliz Natal e Novo Ano!

Oh, my dear goodness, the time is passing SO fast!!! I have so many wonderful stories to tell, but I can't leave out the mind-blowing festivities of Christmas and New Year! One thing is clear - with all my heart I can say that the last Christmas season was one I will never forget.

CHRISTMAS or, according to my wonderful husband, I dearly love - KRISTMAN

As you can understand from my previous entries, I have been working hard to create a proper Christmas feeling in this country of neverending sun and fun :). I had made so many plans for the Christmas day - I got the best recepie for making ginger bread cookies, the icing, I had started the manufacturing of my "cross stiching" Christmas gifts. Acording to the plans of my husbendinho on the day of 25th, we would all gather at his dad sister's house to celebrate. Already one month before he tried to comfort me saying that Tia Julia (aunt Julia) will make so much Chistmas food I will easily forget all the tasty delicious miracles that will be on my family's table in Latvia. A little side note that, hopefully, will explain the biggest shock of this year - the time here is taking it's own pace. And because our days are all mixed up with sun, beach, sleep, movies, ice cream and rest we often loose the track of days and dates. So, back to the story. It is 23rd of December, I am going over all the things I need to do tomorrow - finish the gifts, make some pīrādziņi, ginger bread cookies, do a little shopping before the celebration on 25th. See, in Latvia, we have the big dinner and gift giving part on the eve of Christmas, on 24th. So, for me, the real Christmas is on 24th. And partly I was happy that here they would celebrate it on 25th because it would give the whole day of 24th only for us - me and my Mr Husband! It would be a perfect Latvian Christmas and then what happens on 25th is not my concern :) I was still planning the perfect tommorrow when we receive a phone call from Thiago's mom. "WHERE ARE YOU! WE ARE WAITING YOU!" After few minutes of screaming and shouting on the both sides of telephone, I can evaluate the damage - WOW, it's not 23rd of December! It is actually 24th!!!!! AND WE HAVE MISSED CHRISTMAS!!!!!!! A sudden but very strong crying started! How it could happen!! My gifts unfinished, cookies undone, decoratings still in shops! And, after all, the snow didn't come!!! I think it would be very educating to film the reaction of men when they wives are crying! So helpless and desperate, but so sweet :) After few minutes, when I could calm down, I found out that the family celebration will not be on 25th but on 24th, so, basically, they are waiting for us now. It was around 1.pm. To make the very long story short, after one hour we were at Tia Julia's house, ready to celebrate. BUT.... hm...where's the crazy, non-stop cooking, Thiago promised me so confidently???!! And we will have the dinner only around 9pm. So, it gives us 7 good hours for socializing. Very nice! And thank you Tia Julia for the good food but forgive me for spending the most of the 7hours visiting my Latvian kitchen and the table in my thoughts. Needless to say I spent the next night finishing my gifts and crying over the non-existing ginger bread cookies with sugar icing.

THE NEW YEAR

Quickly learning from my bad Christmas experience, I didn't make ANY plans for the New Year. I decided to take in everything that the life will bring on! We were expecting our friends from Latvia to come for a visit for few days and that was my New Year's gift! My mom had given them a big bag with all kinds of things that made me very happy!
The last day of the year we spent prepearing for the night - the men were trying to decide where to go and how to go. Finally, we agreed on spending the night at Capacabana beach, welcoming the New Year together with other 2 million people. Nice! And, no doubts, it was the most spectacolous New Year in my life! The fire works went on for something close to 20 minutes and it was just BEAUTIFUL.
Everything seems to be good?? NAHA!!! It's Brazil, forgot?? There was some little misunderstanding between our Brazilian men and instead of spending the rest of the night at one of our friend's appartament we had to get a taxi to come home. "What a big deal?" you might ask.... Well.. imagine all Latvia coming together on one spot and trying to get a taxi to bring you somewhere. It takes some time... well, more then that - it takes a lot of walking, a lot of shouting, avoiding drunk and over excited crowds of people, avoiding busses who had people leaning outside the windows to get some fresh air and to give even more space for other pasangers. Finally, after 5 hours of this exciting adventure, we were inside the taxi that agreed to bring us home for three times bigger price. Nice!
